The 80's hit song Whip It by the band Devo was released as a single on August 25, 1980 which was included on their third studio album freedom of choice. But The single didn't gain it's popularity until its re-release in 1981 with some help from MTV. While writing the lyrics, founding member Jerry Kasawlay was inspired by Thomas Pynchon's parodies in his book Gravity's Rainbow. The band pulled from 3 different songs they were working on at the time to form Whip it. The music video was directed by Jerry Kasawlay. and features the band dressed in their signature red energy dome hats. It incorporates surreal imagery with quirky visual effects adding to the song's unique appeal.
