📝: mgk went on The New York Times' podcast called "Popcast." During this interview with Jon Caramanica and Joe Coscarelli, mgk talked about how he got the 'Semi-Charmed Life' sample cleared after facing the National Guard. mgk's new song "starman" sampled Semi-Charmed Life by Third Eye Blind.

mgk said, "I know Stephan [Jenkins]. My friend Mod [Sun] called me, he was like, 'Third Eye Blind's gonna be at Emo Nite. I know you sampled that song [Semi-Charmed Life] like, maybe you should come out. [I] Pulled up. I said, 'My name is mgk. You're probably gonna get a letter that's like, we wanna sample this song. I just wanted you to hear it from my mouth first that I'm a massive fan. It's done with respect, and like, I am of this scene, like, it's in good hands. So he's like, 'Oh, cool, man. Take my number.' I followed up with him a couple times, and he was always really cool, and I've sent him other songs that I was just doing. He was like, you know, like the songwriting. One day, I was like, 'Hey, is today a good day for me to play this to you?' He was like, 'Sure. I'm in this house in Malibu.' But PCH (Pacific Coast Highway) was blocked because of the fires. I pulled my car up to the National Guard. He's like, 'You can't go through.' I was like, 'I'm trying to clear a third eye blind sample with the singer, and his house is right up there. I'm not gonna make it in time if I have to drive two and a half hours around. Is there any way you could just be a part of the story with me and let me go through?' and he was like, 'Alright, don't do this again. Good luck with your song.' I got on the beach. I played him [Stephan Jenkins] the song. He approved it."
